1. “Have you DJ’ed a wedding at our venue before?”
Every venue has its quirks, from barn acoustics to power limitations, and sound restrictions.
A DJ who’s familiar with your venue type (especially popular spaces across West Sussex, Surrey, or Hampshire) will already know how to tailor sound and lighting for the best atmosphere.
Why it matters:
It means fewer surprises on the day, and smoother setup with your venue coordinator or wedding planner. Nowadays, some DJs prefer to stream their music, imagine if both mobile and Wi-Fi signals are a challenge?
If they haven’t played there, and they’re honest they will say. Diligent DJs do their research without you needing to ask them. I am always amazed what you can learn from Google Streetview, the venue’s website and even reading reviews from guests.
2. “What should we share with you, what information would help you get to know our vision better?”
A good DJ listens to hear your needs and vision. A better DJ will give you some structure to help you get to a definition.
For us, we always encourage couples to share a few tracks to help us build a soundtrack that feels personal, not predictable. We have a simple structure we use for one reason only, personalisation. Imagine the Bride has that one songs that her crew played on repeat when they were at university. Now, imagine us playing it whilst she is in the bathroom with her maid of honour. This is why we ask for the split between Bride and Groom.

- General party songs
- Hell no list (this is like Gold to DJ)
- How would you like to end the night (vibe check, last 2-3 songs)
- Any special or guest specific request.
3. “What’s included in your quote?”
Every quote should spell out exactly what’s included such as hours of play, arrive time for setup, lighting, microphones, any extra costs for going beyond the specified times if required.
Some DJs offer optional extras such as uplighting, early setup, or photo booth hire, so it’s worth clarifying before you book. We offer what we’ve found to be popular and to cover most of your needs, e.g. we don’t charge extra for uplights because they do add to the experience. We feel they should be standard and included in the price.
4. “How do you handle requests on the night, and is there anything you won’t play?”
Many DJs will know how to balance guest requests without upsetting the flow. They’ll filter out anything that doesn’t fit the energy or your preferences, while still making guests feel involved.
At DJ A Events, we are happy to take requests through a subtle approach: read the room, and manage timing. Of course we crosscheck this with your preferences (see question 2 above), and if it doesn’t fit, manage the situation. Easier said than done in some situations but this is our job! We love all styles of music but will not play just one genre for the whole evening. If that’s what you are after, we are not your DJs for you. Our experience has taught us that each wedding is unique by the very nature of the varied music tastes of your guests.
5. “What backup plans do you have for equipment or illness?”
This one separates professionals from hobbyists. Reliable DJs carry backup gear (laptops, decks, speakers, cables) and have contingency plans if something unexpected happens. Most DJs have built up a vast stock of gear but illness, is something vitally important. Ask they about how they cater for this, hopefully, they will talk to a trusted network of backup DJs. 6. “How do you work with other suppliers and the venue team?”
Your DJ often has to coordinate with photographers, videographers, and event staff to make sure every transition, from first dance to last song flows perfectly.
Look for someone who’s organised, communicative, and respectful of the timeline. We always enquire about the other suppliers as we start the planning. This is so that if needed, we can make contact and take one more thing off your list. A collaborative DJ keeps your evening smooth and stress-free.
7. “Can we see photos or videos from recent weddings?”
Real examples tell you everything you need to know, energy, crowd interaction, lighting quality, and professionalism.
